      What is a gambeson?

A gambeson is a padded garment worn under armour to cushion against impact and stop metal chafing the skin. At Chows Emporium these are made thinner than traditional gambesons, in a soft cotton blend, so they work as a base layer under leather armour or as standalone outerwear for warrior and fighter characters. One size. Machine washable.

      Thinner by design

Traditional gambesons are built thick for steel-weapon reenactment, which makes them heavy, stiff, and hot to fight in for hours. Chow took the same padded shape and cut it down. The result sits lighter on the shoulders, moves with you through a fight, and washes in a machine after a muddy weekend. It carries the look of a seasoned fighter without committing to a full armour set. Pair one with vambraces, a belt, and trousers for a complete kit.

      Layering

A gambeson sits over a shirt and under your armour in most builds. A linen shirt works underneath if you want a collar showing. Leather pieces strap straight over the top. Browse the LARP leather armour that layers over a gambeson, or the LARP belts and sashes that pull the waist in over it.

      Sizing

All Chows Emporium products are one size. Measurements are listed in each individual product description. If you have a question about measurements, message us and we will help.

      Frequently asked questions

What is a gambeson worn under?
A gambeson goes under armour, so leather or metal pieces sit over the padding rather than against your skin. It cushions impact and stops the armour rubbing. Plenty of players wear one on its own too, as standalone outerwear for a fighter look.
Are thin gambesons any good for LARP?
A thinner gambeson trades some of the heavy padding of reenactment kit for comfort and movement. For LARP, cosplay, and Renaissance Faire wear, where you are on your feet all day rather than taking steel blows, the lighter build is the point. It still pads out your gear and takes armour on top.
Can you wear a gambeson on its own?
Yes. These work as standalone outerwear, and plenty of players wear them without armour over the top. Over a shirt with vambraces and a belt, a gambeson carries a warrior or fighter build on its own.
How do you wash a gambeson?
The lightweight design means these can go in a machine, which matters after a weekend in the field. Traditional thick gambesons usually cannot. Check the care label on your item before washing.
